Proteus defeated the X-Men. He was able to take a small village, now his goal is the whole world.
What You Need to Know:
Sadly, this is the second to last issue for Charles Soule’s take on Astonishing X-Men. The battle with some of the most strongest and chaotic minds have seemed to be futile; where one battle ends the other begins. The Astral Plane has brought nothing but trouble to the real world when maniacs like Shadowking and Proteus have been loose. Shadowking is straight up evil, but Proteus (who was also the deceased son of Moira Mactaggert) thinks he’s doing the world a favor by giving them whatever their heart desires and bending reality to ensure they get it. But one man’s heaven is another man’s hell.
What Just Happened:
The fight scenes aren’t quite what they were in the last issue, but still intense. Proteus has been on the upper ground this whole time; he’s bested them more than Shadowking ever did. Does that have anything to do with the fact that they don’t have the actual Charles Xavier? X is obviously the younger version, but he is so much more reckless and has not given them a real reason to trust him. Their only chance is the non-psychical fight Proteus on the physical plane, since Logan and Archangel can do damage with their metal claws and wings. That can hurt Proteus and slow him down at least a little, but Logan is also slicing up everything else in sight, which may be killing the townspeople. It took Mystique of all people to point that out.
Age has nothing to do with wisdom in this comic, I guess. Old Man Logan and Young Charles are extremely reckless. They did devise a clever plan that involved a sad illusion of his deceased mother who had a hand in ending his life and Rogue took some of his energy the blow. They take huge risks that could endanger lives, mostly their own, especially since the trade of ending one battle is getting into a fight with someone bigger and badder.
