Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark are getting a magical make-over just in time for Halloween.
James Tynion IV, along with an all-star group of artists, are tackling the first event in the “New Justice” family of titles with a five-part weekly series. It’s an event that promises to “rewrite the future of DC’s magical heroes.” It will also bring tangible horror to this corner of the DC Universe.
“The magical side of DC Universe has fans like me who know these strange characters backwards and forwards, but to do a horror story you need to center it on people who still have things to discover, where it’s still a mystery to them,” Tynion IV said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “The idea of creating a situation that would make Diana afraid, when you know how fearless and powerful she is, that makes it scary and makes the fear real to the reader.”
Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark: The Witching Hour #1, the debut 48-page issue, will heavily draw from No Justice, where Diana discovered she has an unexpectedly strong connection to magic. Hecate, the witch-goddess of magic will have to face the monsters she stole her own magic from. by activating the witch-marked humans she stored vast amounts of power within. One of the most powerful witch-marked turns out to be Diana herself.
Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark: The Witching Hour #1 will go on sale October 3, 2018.
Wonder Woman #56, with art by Ray McCarthy and Emanuela Lupacchino, will have Diana and Justice League Dark facing Hecate yet again. This time, Hecate will be hunting Diana to access the magical power hidden within her. Could Wonder Woman somehow tap into that power to become a match for the witch-goddess?
Wonder Woman #56 will release on October 10, 2018.
Part 3 of the series (Justice League Dark #4), with art by Alvaro Martinez and Raul Fernandez, Justice League Dark will be thrown for a loop when everything they thought they knew about Wonder Woman and Hecate is proven wrong. The Parliament of Trees will reap the consequences. Hecate judges the world lacking in strength to survive an onslaught by the Otherkind. She decides to burn it to the ground to replace it with a world of her own making.
Justice League Dark #4 will hit shelves October 17, 2018.
Hecate’s new world is born in Wonder Woman #57 (Released on October 24, 2018). With the return of artists Emanuela Lupacchino and Ray McCarthy, we will see Wonder Woman under the goddess’ total control. The battle for Diana’s soul (and the lives of Justice League Dark) will culminate in the 48-page Finale of The Witching Hour with art by Jesus Merino.
Regardless of the outcome, this four-issue arc will certainly be a separation from the norm for Wonder Woman fans, plunging a beloved comic icon into unfamiliar and threatening situations, all while leading a team of magical heroes against a nearly omnipotent goddess of magic.
