We’re Killers, We Can’t Trust Ourselves-(X-23 #5 Comic Review)

X-23 #5-Two Birthdays and Three Funeral Part 5

Writer: Mariko Tamaki

Artist: Juann Cabal & Marcio Fiorito

Color: Nolan Woodard
Cover: Mike Choi

Letterer: Cory Petit

Synopsis: All is revealed as Laura and Gabby fight to return to each other and work to uncover the ultimate machinations of the power-hungry Cuckoos. But which team will take the day — and will any of the sisters emerge unscathed?

What You’ll Need To Know: So we learned that Sophie is in Laura’s head, and Esme has possessed Gabby. Their whole plan was to transfer Esme’s consciousness into Gabby’s body after they saw what happened to Sophie. But we know, Esme was the one who sped up her death. Gabby invulnerability makes her unstoppable. Sophie knows her sisters are totally cuckoo (ha), and does want to stop them.

In  This Issue: Laura is on her way to get Gabby back, with Sophie’s guidance. It will be extremely hard, because the longer Gabby is possessed, they more difficult it will be to get her back. With the help of Beast; or his illusion, Gabby/Esme goes for an attack and is thrown off. Sophie reveals her plan to the rest of the sisters, and she’s even stabbed another. So much for their 5 in 1 dynamic. That’s the whole reason the remaining sisters reanimated them.

They have a pretty bloody battle that involved them using psionic powers and claws. Luckily, Sophie’s plan worked, then the Cuckoos disappeared. Laura finally gets Gabby back, and their bond keeps them strong. Laura lightens up and finally decides to celebrate hers and Gabby’s birthday because they are more than just clones, they’re family.

Hey nerds! I'm a 23 year old cosplayer from Southern California who loves comic books as well! I love going to metal and punk shows. I'm a hostess on Shoot The Breeze Comics' shows Thought Bubbles, Panel to Panel, and Guardians of the Con-Life.
Summary
Would definitely like to see more action in the next story. This was the best comic in this storyline that took forever to build up. The art was good and very vibrant, Cabal and Fiorito definitely did a good collab of both their styles.
Good
  • Finally, bloody action
  • Happy ending that wasn’t corny
Bad
  • The rest of the issues were pretty weak, seemed to drag on but this issue was coherent
