What You Need To Know:

Codex has given Gargan a new Symbiote, making him an even deadlier Scorpion once again. Speaking of Codex, after Eddie and Dylan make it to the Agent Venoms’ hideout, they discover that Codex IS in fact this universe’s Dylan Brock!

What Happens:

We learn the history of this universe! After Eddie killed himself, Annie became Venom, and eventually Agent Venom. She raised Dylan as best as she could, and then his powers manifested and he connected to Knull. He became a “living hive mind”, and stole a piece of Venom, which he then used to create an army of Symbiotes and took over the world. All of this is why Annie is so scared of Dylan and Eddie, she’s worried he’ll turn out like him. Before they can talk about it anymore, Scorpion shows up and attacks!

…. and then Dylan uses his powers and kills his Symbiote almost instantly. Well… that new cool Scorpion design didn’t last very long. Eddie demands to know why Gargan has been going through all this trouble for revenge, to which he replies that he holds Eddie responsible for leaving him for dead after Carnage almost ripped out his spine and left him paralyzed. So the issue ends with Eddie demanding that Gargan take them to Codex since he knows where he is, and then they can all go home.

Thoughts:

I was happy to learn more of the history of this universe, the backstory behind Codex and Annie is pretty interesting and cool. But overall not a whole lot actually happens. I like the character stuff, but I am very disappointed that Scorpion’s new Symbiote design and everything went away after a single glare from Dylan. Honestly it makes me feel like Dylan’s either gonna lose his powers, get nerfed, or go away altogether after King in Black, because he feels WAY too strong, especially if Venom is gonna be fighting other Symbiote based villains going forward (cuz like, we ALL know Carnage’ll be back in like, a month or 2). The art from Luke Ross was very good, I love the way he drew all the characters in this one. I appreciate that we have moved on from the past couple issues of thumb heads for Symbiotes (no offense to Juan Gedeon, I do quite like his art, but looking back his heads on the Symbiote characters like Venom and Scorpion were… odd). Anyway, this issue was fine, I wish more happened, but oh well, you only have so many pages to work with.
