Batman: White Knight #1

In Gotham The Joker has run amuck for far too long; escaping and being put back to Arkham all over again has been a nuisance. Batman has had it with The Clown prince of Gotham and will stop at nothing to get him. While Batman is blinded by his anger against The Joker and citizens of Gotham get hurt along the way, many begin to question Batman’s methods. Is he protecting Gotham City or is he only making it worse? Someone does see it that way and he wants to change it to make the City of Gotham better again; safe from The Dark Knight.

What you need to know: Batman finally at his end with The Joker has become reckless while putting lives in danger with his chase. Batgirl and Nightwing worry of what Batman has become as they try to give him advice, only to fall to deaf ears. The City of Gotham is divided between being behind the vigilante movement or being against it. Are they above the law? The Joker feels that Batman must pay for what he has done.

What you’ll find out: Commissioner Gordon says that the GCPD are not involved with The Batman, but they let him run around never to arrest him. The Joker (Jack Napier) wants to show Gotham that he was never truly the villain, that Batman has always been the villain.

What just happened? Hiding in a pill distributing facility, Batman and The Joker face each other after a long chase. In their fight, the GCPD stands and watch as Batman does something that even they question Batman’s tactics. As Batman does that act, it is recorded and played on the nightly news. Arguments emerge as they question if Batman is doing the right thing or if he’s the prime problem In Gotham City. In Arkham, The Joker now cured, has made a full recovery and now goes by Jack Napier. Spending most of his time in the Arkham liberty, Jack Napier now studies to take the GCPD and Batman to court for what they have done to him.

Rating: 9/10

Final Thoughts: When I was little my very first memory of Batman was Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns. God I love those movies; still do. But after watching Batman 89 I’ve always told my friends in school that The Joker’s name was Jack Napier. It was never canon as The Joker’s name was never truly mentioned anywhere in comics and it has always been a mystery. I’m so happy to see that the name Jack Napier has appeared again for The Joker in Batman: White Knight. Sean Murphy is taking us into a story where we kind of side with The Joker and we go against Batman for maybe the first time. Mr. Murphy’s art work is amazing and goes perfectly with this book; I have seen upcoming images of further issues and it looks amazing. This is a series I have had my eyes on since it was announced and cannot wait where it will lead us.
