The Mighty Thor #701

Writer: Jason Aaron

Guest Artist: James Harren

Cover Artist: Russell Duaterman and Matthew Wilson

What You Need to Know: Malekith and his Allies are waging war across the realms and to stop him, Volstagg has picked up the Hammer of the War Thor again. Despite his attempt to give it up, the call proved irresistible because the Hammer knew what was coming. Mangog.

In This Issue: Mangog and War Thor are battling it out in full force on Old Asgard. Mangog, a creature that is said to have been born from the rage of an entire slaughtered people long ago. No one who has faced him has survived and all Mangog wants is to tear apart every Asguardian it can get its hands on. He is said to be the “Ultimate Justice of all the Gods”. Meanwhile in Vanaheim, the Realm of the Old Gods, war is in full effect there. The Vanir Gods are beginning to win when the B.E.R.S.E.R.K.E.R. Squad is deployed to take over.

In Niffleheim, the Land of the Dead, Queen Karnilla, who we saw perish in the last volume, is reunited with her love Blader the Brave who tells her that she has in fact perished. Better news, he is now King Blader, Lord of the Corpses but their moment is ruined when they are attacked by fire monsters serving Sinder, the NEW Queen of Hel! But it’s the fight of War Thor and Mangog that is the issues climax and Mangog takes not only the hand of a fallen War Thor, but his hammer and crushes them both. Malekith appears, giving Mangog the information he needs and a small gift for Volstagg to end the battle. At least for now

Summary
The back story of Mangog is enough to make you cringe but to see him completely beat the living thunder out of War Thor was impressive. The art is simple but you can still feel the pain of every punch both fighters give. You always think that a new villain is never powerful enough to take out your favorite superhero out but Mangog is pretty fierce. I’m kind of nervous to see how our favorite Lady Thor handles him when the two finally meet!
