Deathstroke was captured by the Secret Society and put on trial while the Defiance team was left without any clue as to his whereabouts. David Isherwood, also known as Dr. Ikon, created Deathstroke and Jericho’s suits, had an affair with Jericho and was believed to be dead. However, at the end of the trial, Dr. Ikon came crashing through the ceiling, grabbed Slade, and left with him to exact his revenge!

What Happened:

Four days have passed since the disappearance of Slade, and the members of Defiance are getting worried. Well, most of them are, Terra is convinced it’s another one of Slade’s tests. Power Girl does some investigating and quickly discovers that there is residual Speed Force Energy left over from when Zoom captured Slade, which proves to the team that he was taken by a speedster. Hosun tells them that he can track down the Speed Force Energy, but Adeline reminds the team that they have a mission in New Orleans, adding that Deathstroke is probably fine and can take care of himself. Jericho agrees with his mother, and directs them team to prepare to leave, with the exception of Terra, who decided to just leave.

As the Defiance team gets ready, we check in with Ikon and Slade, and Dr. Ikon is just beating on Slade while his suit is telling him that he will be dead very soon if this keeps up. Ikon lets up at the last moment, and introduces Slade to a priest, the man who has been taking care of him since he has been believed dead. Ikon and Deathstroke recap their history with banter and flashbacks, while Ikon also explains what he’s been up to, finally telling Deathstroke about his relationship with his son. Ikon doesn’t believe that Deathstroke can really change, and he plans to stop him once and for all. Meanwhile, Defiance decided to ignore Adeline’s order and go after Deathstroke anyway. They track the Speed Force Energy to the now abandoned headquarters of the Secret Society, where they find Terra there waiting for them. Terra had decided to track Slade down on her own, thinking that Defiance would follow Adeline’s order and go to New Orleans instead. Power Girl worries that they are leaving an important job undone in New Orleans, but Jericho reassures her that there was no crisis there, and it was just a lie from Adeline to direct them away from Slade. The only information they have on Slade’s whereabouts is that a monster with a Canadian accent took him, something that Jericho recognizes indicates David Isherwood.

Back in the church, Deathstroke and Ikon finish up their conversation/recap, and it’s time for fighting to ensue once more. The two continue to duke it out, but Slade is unable to overcome Dr. Ikon’s strength. Ikon says he’s not going to kill Deathstroke, he wants to recondition him with the help of Father Suel, the man who helped him. Ikon leaves Deathstroke alone, or mostly alone. Slade is left in the company of “Wintergreen,” not the real Billy Wintergreen who is with Adeline but the AI based on Wintergreen that Isherwood created to personally annoy Deathstroke. As Jericho takes the Defiance team to Canada to find his father, Adeline complains to the real Wintergreen that the team is getting away from her, and it was meant to be hers in the first place. Before Wintergreen can respond, the two are surprised to see Kenan Kong, the New Super-Man from China on their doorstep with a warrant to arrest Slade Wilson!

Thoughts on the issue: A lot of this issue felt like it was stalling. The fight between Ikon and Deathstroke was dragged out, and filled in with a lot of exposition about Ikon and Slade that we already learned in this run. It’s nice for Slade to finally learn about Ikon and Jericho, but it took a little too long to get there, and Adeline is the one who really needs to learn about her son. The Defiance part of the issue also moved slowly, almost like you could feel the force of the plot telling them “You can’t find Deathstroke yet, the story isn’t ready for you to move on.” The issue had a lot of interesting conversation amongst the team as well as between Slade and Ikon, but it still felt like it was lacking in content. And one last thing! Terra mentioned some “history” between her and Slade, as the “Did Judas Contract still happen like that?” mystery continues.

Slade and Ikon attempt to duke it out as the Defiance team attempts to search for their missing leader, but really they all just talk a lot.
  • Epic fight between Ikon and Deathstroke
  • Sassy Terra is sassy
  • Jericho is growing into a team leader
  • Plot is dragged out with lots of talking
  • Ends in kind of the same place it begins
