What you need to know:

Cable has had many roles in his time: son, father, husband, friend, teacher, leader, president, freedom fighter, X-Man, Messiah, and Askani’s son. So what will his role be this time round?

What just happened?

13 years ago, Cable stands with a gun pointing at Selene’s head. She tells him to put the gun down and that the Externals’ fight is not with them.To Shatterstar’s dismay, he agrees and states she did not kill Candra because she believed we did. However, he lays down the law that if he thinks she is involved, he will be back and Selene tells him to stay out of Externals’ business.

Later, Cable is in one of his bases with Longshot, Doop and Shatterstar, who immediately challenges why they were pulled into battle then turn tail. If detailed that if Cruel and Nicodemus are willing to side with her, something bigger is out there.

Cable suspects others such as Burke, Saul and Gideon may have also returned from the dead, but wonders why were they not already aligned with Selene. He is hoping they may talk. Doop makes a comment, but Cable sets the record straight that it is rumored that Cannonball is an External so the team are going to split into two groups and are going to need some reinforcements if they intend to take Selene on again.

Selene and her crew are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and with the death of Candra, she feels that it is time for her secret weapon to be freed. But who does she aim it at?

Cable’s first recruit is the future X-Man Hisako, AKA Armour, meanwhile Laura, AKA X-23, is tearing it up. Shatterstar approaches her and this is interesting because she does not know him and claims not to know Cable either, so I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Team 1 consisting of Cable, Armour and Doop approach a wooden secluded cabin in the woods where Burke apparently is. But his powers are precog, so does he know that they are there? Well the answer is clearly, yes. They sit and have a cozy chat while sipping tea and Burke explains that even though he gets to live forever, he has died so many times and hopes that each time will be the last and does not intend to help with Cable’s inquiries.

Team 2 head towards a temple in Mongolia. Shatterstar, Longshot and X-23 make their way up the steep stairs, which is littered with bodies. We learn Saul is one of the oldest Externals and is around 1,000 years old. Cruel and Nicodemus jump out of the shadows and attack Team 2 while Cable learns that someone has discovered how to kill the Externals and he welcomes it. Burke warns him that he has distracted him too long already and that his friends are in trouble.

The Externals duke it out against Star and X while Longshot is ordered to discover what The Externals are trying to keep them from seeing.

So who was Burke hiding when Cable leaves and what does Longshot see in the temple?

Final Thoughts

This is a really nice build up and the story is starting really well, which makes a nice change as I have felt like the story part in Marvel has gone downhill over the last few years. This is a nice surprise and I am looking forward to how this develops.

Maybe it’s because I have come into the story late, but am I missing something is this story? I mean, Laura was going by X-23 and she did not seem to know Cable when they met in Messiah War. I sense some research in the near future.
