Marvel To Launch Create Your Own Comic Platform

Have you ever wanted to create your own comic book? Well here comes your chance! Marvel Entertainment announced in a press release today that you will soon be able to create your own comics starring your favorite characters from the Marvel Universe! With premade models, backgrounds, props and captions, you too can be a Marvel creator…and not get paid for it.

“If you’ve got the burning desire to build your own intricate universes, you’ll want to act fast. Creative pursuits wait for no one, and the sooner you have a platform, the sooner you can get to work!”

What The Verge was able to point out in their coverage of the new platform. When further looking at the terms and conditions of the website that Marvel’s platform will be located, you find something…concerning.

“The perpetual, irrevocable, exclusive, royalty-free and fully transferable and sub-licensable right, for the full term of copyright protection available (including renewal terms), to use, reproduce, transmit, communicate to the public, print, publish, publicly display, publicly perform, exhibit, distribute, redistribute, license, sub-license, copy, index, comment upon, modify, adapt, translate, create derivative works based upon, make available, and otherwise exploit, in whole or in part, in all languages, anywhere in the world, by all means, methods, processes, and media formats and channels now known or hereafter devised, in any number of copies and without limit as to time, manner or frequency of use, without further notice to you, with or without attribution, and without the requirement of permission from or payment to you or any other person or entity, such User-Submitted Content (including, without limitation, any and all original elements of such User-Submitted Content and any and all works utilizing such User-Submitted Content and/or such elements thereof) for any purpose that the Tap Tap/Marvel Parties may see fit in their sole discretion, including, without limitation, in conjunction with advertisements, promotions, marketing activities, and/or any other commercial activities, effective as of the earliest date such User Submitted Content exists within the Service. ”

When you break it down, it seems fairly similar to most fanfiction websites. However, as The Verge points out, the restrictions on what is allowed in these created comics is a bit..lengthy with more not even listed. Amoung the list are “No politics, including ‘alternative lifestyle advocacies’,” “No Misleading Language”, “Any “controversial topics,’including “social issues’,” and just for kicks, “Any amusement parks that aren’t Disney amusement parks” So if you wanted a comic about Spider-man going to Cedar Point, youre out of luck.

What could seemingly be a throwback to old disney style complete the adventure comic flash games, comes in the wake of many Marvel titles such as: She-Hulk, Luke Cage, America etc, and has left many to believe this is Marvel attempting to syphon ideas for new books off of their fans. However with the restrictions of “no politics, including alternative lifestyle advocacies” it seems like anyone wanting to make the next America Chaves comic now that she’s been cancelled had better not reference her sexuality or better not reference any nazi punching from Captain America…you know the thing he did in his first ever issue and the greater part of his existence. Also America punched Hitler too so neither is allowed.

Only time will tell if this new initiative will be a harmless product for young kids and fans to enjoy or a tool to find safe and harmless stories to tell that wont cause controversy or offend readers. Maybe it could be used to just find new writers for Marvel in general with so many leaving.

Marvel Create Your Own is coming soon and you can sign up for it here.
