Batman Beyond Brings the Fight (Batman Beyond #18 Comic Review)

Writer: Dan Jurgens

Penciller: Phil Hester

Inker: Ande Parks

Colorist: Michael Spicer

Letterer: Travis Lanham

Cover: Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo

Last Time: Payback revealed himself as the mastermind behind Terry and Stalker’s troubles, as the two of them were sent tumbling down to the streets below, and Ten showed up for a surprise last stand.

This time: Ten squares off against Payback, quickly getting hurled aside. As Stalker and Terry plummet towards their death, Stalker grabs Ten’s floating card to save them both, as Ten tries to keep up the fight against Payback unsuccessfully. Terry rescues a pair of firefighters who came to clean-up the chaos, as a bizarre pink light teleports Terry directly into trouble; a tank completely filled with water. Payback plans to make Ten watch her old ally die, but Terry manages to break out at the last moment; and as Bruce and Matt watch on from the Batcave as things get even worse, Matt breaks one of Bruce’s old display cases; as Robin, the boy wonder makes a triumphant return.

Reed Strong’s Strong Read: This issue, plainly, as dynamic as hell. For an arc that started up somewhat slowly, the action really is non-stop here as every thread comes together in a satisfying way. Ten really tries her best as a heroic save, Matt supports Bruce in that best sidekick way you can, Stalker finally gets interesting. Payback is a great and obvious choice for this arc, and as the pieces are coming together, we’re getting a truly positively chaotic brawl.

Summary
Batman Beyond has been going on for 30-something issues now since the DCYOU, and it continues to positively surprise every single issue.
Good
  • Matt get some well-needed time in the real spotlight.
  • Stalker hits his arc.
  • Ten gets some kinda-sorta redemption, but overall simply kickass moments.
Bad
  • Matt's new costumed debut depends entirely on you buying this new life for the character.
