That’s right. The X-Men return to Marvel in 2019! The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and related properties look to return to Marvel by end of Summer 2019. Fox Studios held a meeting where the 21st Century Fox president Peter Rice announced the official Disney purchase of Fox Studios is to be finalized and completed by Spring-Summer 2019.
As well as X-Men and Fantastic Four, Disney will have the rights to Deadpool, Cable, Wolverine, X-Force, Silver Surfer, and Galactus. The deal also gives Disney Fox TV, which includes FX Network with shows such as Legion, The Gifted, The Simpsons, Futurama and The X-Files. This also means that Disney will have full rights to the original Star Wars trilogy, James Cameron’s Avatar, The Planet of the Apes franchise, and Predator.
Back to the X-Men and Fantastic Four being back with Marvel, Kevin Feige dodged the possibility by saying they are not thinking about it and are focusing on what they have already announced.
Directors of The Avengers: Infinity War, Anthony and Joe Russo, have put themselves into the mix for a Secret Wars movie. Which, you guessed it, would feature all the Marvel characters in a massive event. James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, has expressed his excitement for Annihilus and the Silver Surfer. Speaking of the Surfer, rumors are circling that Surfer may appear in Infinity War and/or Avengers 4.
Not all is sunshine and rainbows, however. Marvel faces a large bump in the road for when they decide to recast Wolverine. As you know, Hugh Jackman recently retired from the role. However, rumors say that Disney and Marvel are excited about the recast possibility along with the chance to bring him into the MCU fold. There are many differences of opinions in this buy-out, such as concerns for Deadpool, as it is an R-rated property. Disney CEO Bob Iger states that they will be keeping the property the same, however it is too soon to cheer about that. Disney/Marvel TV recently stopped the Deadpool animated series from moving forward. They said that it seemed too “adult” and risky.
The Mouse will not be going with projects such as a Gambit movie, X-23, or even something like a New Mutants that will never happen again. (Well, about New Mutants, the release date follows the Disney purchase, so fans will have to see what will happen here.)
With the return of X-Men and the Fantastic Four into the MCU, will they be rebooted completely with brand new actors and new character arcs? Should Disney act as if the previous X-Men movies never happened? Will the same actors that are starring in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix stick around for more? Well, one constant, at least, is Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool for years to come.
Marvel has announced only two movies so far for their Phase 4 plans. This follows the May release of Avengers 4, with Spider-Man Homecoming 2 in July 2019 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in 2020. Who knows, maybe we will see an announcement for new X-Men and Fantastic Four movies in Phase 4. Fans are speculating that Disney has plans for the MCU, and what that entails, well, it seems like we have to wait to find out.
