Batman Beyond #19: The Long Payback Finale

What You Need to Know:

As things were getting worse for the Batman of the future, a familiar costume with a new face came to the rescue. As the new Robin, Matt McGinnis arrived on the scene.

What Just Happened:

Dana bursts into the Batcave to reprimand Bruce for sending Matt out on such a dangerous mission, but the old man remains firm in that while he may not always know what he’s doing, the boy is their best bet. With Terry at Payback’s mercy, the grieving father jams another electrical rod into Batman’s chest as Ten rushes forward in the midst of a sudden blackout. Matt’s distraction gives Terry the upper-hand against Payback, but his sudden appearance manages to only anger Terry and give Payback a hostage. Terry strikes the villain with a few well-timed batarangs, grabs Matt, and makes a quick getaway with Ten at his side.

With a short beginning to a long discussion with Bruce about putting another young boy in danger’s way, Terry pays Stalker’s village a visit. Having a change of heart and realizing he might have been a bit of a villain himself, he joins Stalker’s side for some well-needed medical attention, as Waynetech brings emergency food supplies to the village, enough to last for months—and even beyond.

Reed Strong’s Strong Read:

This was an arc that had ups and downs. The cliffhangers were a little weak and it took a while for the story to get to a run, but the continued focus on Matt’s part of the new backstory combined with an honestly interesting take on Stalker brought us one of the stronger arcs this whole run has had so far. Ten gets to come back in a starring role, we get another reminder of Beyond’s unique rogue gallery, and Bruce gets some development into falling into one of his old tropes: putting young boys in danger.

Summary
Matt takes the spotlight as Batman Beyond reminds us that while there's a different look, Robin is as needed as ever.
Good
  • Matt continues to shine.
  • Stalker gets redemption.
  • Terry is as human under the cowl as Bruce is.
Bad
  • Terry's surprise at Bruce putting a child in danger should be more frustration than shock, because well, it's Bruce "Babes in Dixie-Shorts" Wayne.
