What You Need to Know:
The search for allies continues as Hal, John, and Guy try to build their number to prepare to take on the Darkstars. The phrase “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer” comes to mind as the Lanterns try to recruit the worst the galaxy has to offer.
Will Hector Hammond, General Zod, and Arkrillo join the Lanterns or will they just make things worse?
What Just Happened:
The issue begins with a Green Lantern casualty; someone died trying to process a space criminal they arrested. The Darkstars have officially declared war on the Green Lanterns. On Earth, Hal Jordan has a relatively simple time recruiting Hector Hammond. In his adopted homeworld of General Zod, John Stewart uses Zod’s hatred and blame of Tomar-Re for the destruction of Krypton to bring him into the fight. Elsewhere, Guy Gardner makes a decision that provides the shock of the issue when confronted by Tomar-Tu.
This issue breezed by (badum tss). To the point that I was upset when I got to the end of the issue. Even though we still have not gotten to the inevitable battle between the Green Lantern Corps and Darkstars, Venditti continues to capture my attention with the Lanterns’ attempts to strengthen their numbers. Long-time readers of this series will be rewarded by seeing previous antagonists become potential allies.
Hector Hammond has the funniest moment in the issue, and his attempt to become a hero should be a lighthearted character arc to follow in an otherwise dark storyline. The biggest questions I have revolve around the decision Guy made and if it is part of a bigger plan. Also, what happened with Kyle Rayner? Kyle is on the cover but not involved in the issue.
Van Sciver’s art continues to be strong and he continues to be one of the most well known and go-to artists for the Green Lantern Corps.
