So, with this relaunch Coates take into a whole new world with Black Panther. No, literally a whole new world, an entire galactic empire of Wakandans. Yes, Space Wakandans. And these Wakandans are not like your any that we know of. Apparently they’re pissing off the wrong people, so epic scenes of cosmic battles are definitely on the horizon.
Usually, I am very patient. I can see the potential of a story from far away and wait for the eventual payoff. Initially, I was very excited that we were going to take a trip in space with our wealthy and wise Wakandans. I have an enduring sense of mystery but I have a LOT of questions. Coates knows that and puts a glossary of some new group names and castes at the very end. I would have appreciated going into the history with a little more depth. The description of why we’re even in space was the shortest exposition I’ve ever seen written about such a drastic change.
I like the art. It has a sort of style that speaks to both the desolation and filth of the slaves of Goree and the fierce majesty of the Rebels aboard the ship called the Mackandal. Each panel or page could easily be a painting I would hang in my house. The colors are striking and used with precision. If folks do anything, stick around for this awesome art.
I don’t know enough about any of the characters to be connected with them. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? How did this empire grow? How have we have not heard of them before? And the opportunity to explain more of the context is lost in conversations with the guards and the other folks who show up. It is my hope that we don’t wait too long to reveal some of the burning questions of this book and spill them all in a looooong soliloquy by a villain in 10 issues. I think one of the biggest questions for me is how did people from a peaceful and isolationist nation, travel into space 2,000 years ago and become intergalactic conquerors? Once I know that answer, I can relax a bit more and enjoy the series.
