The Life of Gwen Stacey Part 4
Writer: Jason Latour
Artist: Robbi Rodriguez and Chris Visions
Cover Art: Robbi Rodriguez
What You Need to Know:
Gwen has faced a lot of demons since becoming “Spider Woman”; the death of Peter Parker, the tortures Matt Murdock has thrown her, the Venom Symbiote, her father being arrested and being attacked, even dealing with alternate Earth versions of herself. Now she must face the Justice System for her “crimes” as Spider Gwen.
In This Issue:
Word is out about Gwen Stacy turning herself into the cops, and the trial of the century is taking place. “Hulk” Waters is Gwen’s Lawyer and District Attorney Foggy is trying everything he can to clear her name, but it ends up being not enough. Sentenced to S.H.I.E.L. D’s top prison, Gwen feels that she needs to be here to make up for her crimes. But there are a lot of prisoners in there who want Gwen’s Head on their cell walls, except for one person who Gwen put in personally. But despite feeling like it’s a good thing Gwen put him there, it doesn’t mean he is going to go easy on her After denying a proposal from Captain America and finally having enough of the beating from her cellmates, Gwen finally decides that it’s time to end the self-pity and get back to doing what she does best.
The self-pity Gwen feels through most of the issue is understandable. She has had to deal with a lot since putting on the mask, so it’s no surprise she would feel that. But after a while, it gets a bit musty even for the reader. Thankfully with Latour’s wonderful writing, she pulls herself out just in time to get back to the good stuff. Obviously, as fans, we don’t want to see our beloved Gwen behind bars and feel bad when she gets sentenced. But sometimes, as we have learned since day 1 of Gwen, things need to happen for a reason and it looks like Gwen is realizing this herself. There is a change in the art style about halfway through and while it’s totally well done, it is a clear change from Rodriguez’s style we have gotten used to. As with Gwen, sometimes we just need a little change.
