*NEWS FLASH* DC’s Birds of Prey film to feature Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya

DC’s Birds of Prey has been buzzing around the rumor mill for a while now but today The Wrap has reported that Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya will star alongside Harley Quinn in the girl gang film. The film will also feature a Batman villain who has not yet appeared in the DECU. (Poison Ivy, perhaps?)

The noticeable absence in the cast line up is Barbara Gordon who, as the information broker Oracle, served as the defacto leader of the Birds of Prey for years in the comics as well as the Birds of Prey TV show.

As previously reported by multiple outlets, Birds of Prey will be produced by Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie, be directed by Cathy Yan, and written by Christina Hodson, who is also tapped to write the Batgirl solo film.

Here is a brief introduction to each of the ladies announced today:

  • Black Canary: Dinah Drake/Lance who is a master martial artist with a supersonic “Canary Cry” that is powerful enough to destroy eardrums and even explode someone’s head.
  • Cassandra Cain: The daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva who was imprisoned and trained to kill and nothing else. Cassandra cannot read and does not usually speak in more than one or two words sentences. After being adopted by Bruce Wayne, she was taught to read by Barbara Gordon and eventually took up the mantle of Batgirl, then late become Black Bat, and in the current comic continuity, she is the superhero Orphan.
  • Huntress: There are two versions of Huntress who are the actually the same person, just from different universes. (As of right now, we do not know which version of Huntress the film will include.)
    • Helena Wayne: The Earth 2 daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle.
    • Helena Bertinelli: The main continuity Huntress who is a teacher and the daughter of the late leader of the Bertinelli crime family.
  • Renee Montoya: A detective with the Gotham City Police Department who was outed as a lesbian in the Gotham Central comic. In the comic event 52, Renee also takes up the mantle of The Question after Victor “Charlie” Sage dies.
    • Reene’s appearance is a landmark one as she will be the first openly lesbian character introduced in a Big 2 comic book movie.

In addition to these ladies, Margot Robbie will reprise the role of Harley Quinn.

Birds of Prey will, reportedly, begin filming in January of 2019 and will carry an R rating.
