The Amazing Spider-Man #2

Pete’s in a really good place. He may have lost his job, his degree, and his reputation as a respected journalist, BUT things are looking great with him and Mary Jane Watson. Unless of course, some Spider-Man activity throws him off balance….. and it always does!

The Deets

Spider-Man and M.J. are back together. Again. Through all the danger and emotional drain that a superhero life can cause, both Peter and M. J. are ready to admit that their foundation has always been the same: each other.

While that’s all nice and sweet, the rest of Peter’s life is pretty much a disaster. One noted disaster is the loss of his graduate’s degree due to plagiarism (thanks to Otto Octavius who had possession of Peter’s body for months). Empire State University contacts Peter to deliver the bad news while also offering him a second chance. The second chance? A seat in a new class with Professor Curt Conners aka The Lizard.

It seems that these days Dr. Conners has the ability to revert to The Lizard at will (not the first time), and it was his insistence that made this second chance possible. Before Peter can officially make up his mind about the offer, the class is attacked by the Taskmaster and Black Ant. Needless to say, with a quick costume change, Spidey makes light work of the 2 villains. Spider-Man makes sure the entire class is ok,  including a special interaction at the end of the issue!

My Take

Nick Spencer is a superb writer. This issue was funny, witty and grounded. The “Back to Basics” arc is just that: breaking down Peter to what makes him great. Peter has no multi-million dollar corporation, his professional reputation has been ruined, and even his desk job is taken. He’s back to being a  young man who is always a day late and a dollar short. I like this version of Peter. He’s the superhero who does the right thing even when there’s nothing to lose. I’m also fully onboard for the renewal of Peter’s relationship with M.J. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
