Miles FINALLY has a solo title of his own again! Today, Marvel and IGN announced the start of Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man’s next solo series, Spider Man: Miles Morales, from writer Saladin Ahmed (Abbott/Black Bolt) and penciller Javier Garrón (Secret Warriors/Inhumans vs X-Men)!
The new on-going series will see Miles “battling threats against the community and the city” all the while facing the classic teenage nemesis of keeping up grades, dating, bullying and dealing with his family (including a confirmed return of Miles Uncle Aaron, aka the Iron-Spider and former Prowler of the Ultimate universe). The first foe Miles will encounter? The Rhino, Saladin Ahmed shared this with IGN: “Of all the Marvel tropes, the hard-luck supervillain is maybe my very favorite, and Rhino is sort of the Ur example of that.” Adding that “there’s going to be some fun back-and-forth between” the two characters.
The new solo series, set to debut this December, will be the very first Miles Morales series not written by the character’s co-creator, Brian Michael Bendis, and published after his departure to DC Comics earlier this year. When asked about following up Bendis’s epic run with the character by IGN, Saladin Ahmed had this to say “his writing was one of the things that brought me back to super hero comics after years away. So of course there’s some intimidation factor. But ultimately you have to just respect the work and creation of those who came before you while still being confident enough to put your own stamp on the stuff.”
The series debut is perfectly timed, with Sony Pictures Animation also releasing the first feature-length film starring Miles Morales, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse this December.
