Well…who didn’t see this coming? After a phenomenal splash made by Michael B. Jordan in the role of Erik Killmonger in this past February’s Black Panther movie, and after the announcement of King T’Challa’s sister Shuri getting her own mini-series, it seems Killmonger is following in the footsteps of the princess of Wakanda and heading back into the pages of print.
In an article written by the Vulture writer Bryan Edward Hill, writer of the upcoming Batman and The Outsiders relaunched series, announced that the villain Erik Killmonger will be getting an all-new mini-series this December with artist Juan Ferreyra. When asked what the series is going to consist of, Hill said to the Vulture,
“I wanted to explore the choices and the failures that lead a person to dedicate their life to revenge, and how that happens. Because with Erik, I feel like it’s really a tragedy. It’s a story of a guy who was failed a lot by Wakanda in certain ways, by the people he met outside of Wakanda, by his own conscience in other ways, and I wanted to paint a portrait of that. Because to me the iconic fight between Erik Killmonger and T’Challa is tragic. It’s something that shouldn’t happen. It’s a conflict that’s borne from a tragic misunderstanding and a young man who was violently taken from his home.”
With this in mind, it’s not that hard to see from the announcement cover of issue 1 that this series may be taking a lot of liberties from the original source material of Erik Killmonger and making him similar to his movie counterpart. When asked on if his story of the Black Panther villain will be similar or different to the film or the comic book, Hill says, “All I can say now is that I’m exploring Erik’s life post-MIT and pre his return to Wakanda. It’s a story about vengeance, transformation, betrayal, and destiny.”
Erik Killmonger from Marvel Comics is a character whose father was forced into servitude of Ulysses Klau’s armies that wished to invade Wakanda, was exiled by King T’Challa and after spending many years in America where he gained a Ph.D. at MIT, set off to return to Wakanda and overthrow the Government after faking desires for redemption to T’Challa himself.
Killmonger #1 will be available on Comixology and a comic store near you this December 6th.
