Marvel’s Netflix shows are currently in a state of flux. We already know Defenders is unlikely to return for another season. Netflix also recently announced that Iron Fist won’t be returning for a third season after recently completing its second season. All eyes are now on Daredevil’s third season that just arrived. Now to the surprise of many, Netflix has announced the cancellation of Luke Cage.
CBR and Deadline only have minor details regarding the cancellation. Their reports state that “the reason for the cancellation, supposedly, boils down to creative differences, though showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker had previously said he had plans for the series if it returned,”. It looks like these plans won’t come into fruition, at least not for now.
Luke Cage rose to popularity and captivated diehard comic book fans and casual viewers alike by showcasing a bulletproof Black man as a hero for the people. The show joined Black Panther and Black Lightning as a wave of media that depicted African and African American Males as heroes and not savages or thugs. When we last saw Luke Cage, Mariah Dillard left everything she owned, including her club, Harlem’s Paradise to Luke Cage. Luke Cage leveraged this into becoming a crime boss to keep crime in Harlem in check. Now we will never get to see the “Kingpin of Harlem” in action. Here’s hoping that Netflix or Disney’s new streaming service combines Iron Fist and Luke Cage and gives us Heroes for Hire and Daughters of the Dragon.
