Strap on your ancient blue bug-totems! DC & Warner Brothers have just announced plans to develop a Blue Beetle film focusing on Jaime Reyes, the Latino-teen superhero & third canonical Blue Beetle!
Gareth-Dunnet Alocer, a native of Mexico, is attached to write the screenplay, with Zev Foreman executive-producing.
The film would be the first solo superhero-movie with a Latino main character, following up WB’s recent inclusions of Latino characters with El Diablo (played by Jay Herandez) in 2016, and the soon-to-be-released Birds of Prey, with Renee Montoya (played by Rosie Perez).
The character of Jaime Reyes made his first appearance in the DC crossover event “Infinite Crisis”, before starring in his own solo on-going comic series in 2006, followed by two more as part of DC Comic’s New 52, and DC Rebirth publishing initiatives. Jaime’s already made the leap to the small screen, with appearances in animated series such as Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, and Justice League Action, along with appearing in the season 10 episode of the live-action Smallville, “Booster”.
There is no word yet on when the film is planned to release, or if it will feature Jaime Reyes’s predecessors, Ted Kord or Dan Garrett.
