Wednesday afternoon it was announced that DC would be undergoing restructuring in the offices. The reasoning, according to the internal memo, was that “DC is going back to its roots of delivering epic stories with our world-class characters, stories and brands.” The full effects of this restructuring were unknown at the time and ultimately made known today.
Among others, one of the people laid off was long-time editor and penciller Mark Chiarello(Solo, Wednesday Comics, Batman Black and White). Mr. Chiarello began working at DC Comics in 1993 and has also worked on New Frontier, the critically acclaimed Batman story arc “Hush”, and Heroes of the Negro Leagues(with writer Jack Morelli).
Chiarello’s lay off was quickly felt throughout the comics community, with both professionals and fans expressing their sadness at the news. DC Comics is certain to feel different with the absence of Mark Chiarello going onward into the future of the company.
