REVIEW: BAD LUCK CHUCK #3

Writer: Lela Gwenn

Artist: Matthew Dow Smith

Colours: Kelly Fitzpatrick

Letters: Frank Cvetkovic

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

In this Issue:

Chuck is in jail, feeling hopeless. Fayola is on the run. Without Chuck to protect her, she’s in a bind. With a phone call, Chuck sends Fayola to the only safe place she knows – a Buddhist temple in the city. Is Chuck’s luck finally turning? Or is this just a momentary breather in the tsunami of entropy? You’d better read this issue to find out.

Kai’s Thoughts:

This book keeps delivering. There isn’t a slow moment. Between Matthew Dow Smitch’s art, and Kelly Fitzpatrick’s colours, I am consistently blown away by how fabulous everything looks. There is a scene where we see the Buddhist temple from the outside and it brought me to tears. It could be the temple here in my hometown. It is beautiful. With Lela Gwenn’s sharp, breakneck pace in her writing, this isn’t a book that lollygags. A treat for the eyes, and for the story, I cannot hype this book enough. For a major publishing debut (as Lela has written several indie projects) this is everything you could hope for. Seriously, if you’re not reading this book, do yourself a favour and grab these issues ASAP.

Summary
Tl;dr - grab this book. It's only 4 issues in the run. For a debut mini series, it is absolutely everything that I wanted out of a comic book. Fun isn't the word I'd use to describe it because of subject matter, but it isn't grimdark. Just go get this book, and thank me later.
Good
  • Gorgeous art and colours
  • Breakneck story pace
  • Made me say 'holy s#!t" out loud
Bad
  • There's only one more issue.
