You’re Gonna Make It After All!
DC revealed the trailer for their upcoming animated series Harley Quinn this past weekend at SDCC. I’ve been watching it on repeat ever since, so here are my Top 5 Thing Moments from the trailer.
5. Joan Jett & Mary Tyler Moore
This one is purely superficial, but the trailer is set to Joan Jett’s cover of Love is All Around Us, the song made famous as the opening theme to The Mary Tyler Moore Show. TMTMS tells us the story of a woman who moves to a new city after breaking up with her boyfriend and starting a new life. (The was groundbreaking in the 70s because it was one of the first shows to details the adventures of a “single and independent” woman.)
Harley Quinn is, clearly, taking some cues from this.
I think the combination of this premise and the combination of Joan Jett’s “I’m gonna kick your ass” version of Love is All Around Us is telling us exactly what we’re getting: Harley out on her own after leaving an abusive partner and f*&%ing s*&% up in all the best ways.
4. Comic Inspiration
This one is also pretty superficial, but the show appears to draw heavily from the Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti (costume, characters, etc) runs of the Harley Quinn comics and I couldn’t be more excited.
In those runs, we saw Harley develop her own identity and story away from Gotham and The Joker. These runs are absolute fan-favorites and I can’t wait to see just how much is going to be incorporated.
3. The Cast
Y’all, this cast.
I mean, what else can I say?
2. Poison Ivy
The inclusion of Poison Ivy (voiced by Lake Bell) has me positively over the moon. Their relationship (and yes I do mean romantic) is one of my favorites in comics and I’ve got everything crossed we get to see that relationship explored in the show.
It’s pretty heavily present in the Conner/Palmiotti and I’ve got everything crossed that we get to see it.
Outside of that relationship, I love to see Ivy kicking ass in any medium. I’m always down for more.
1. Whooping The Joker’s Ass
There are a couple of shots in the trailer where we see Harley kick The Joker’s ass and I AM HERE FOR IT!
Harley has long been the victim of an abusive relationship and I’m glad we’re finally to a point where we can see the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (See what I did there?) outside of the comics.
He’s an abusive asshole and I am ready to see Harley reject him, whoops his ass (repeatedly), and move on with her own story.
So, there they are. My Top 5 Favorite Things from the Harley Quinn trailer. Thanks for taking a moment to read what I had to gush about.
The next 2 years are going to be huge for Harley and I’m thrilled!
