I’m open about how much of a casual I am when it comes to reading comics. I am picky when it comes to my entertainment. Often, i will read things from old favourites, or familiar authors rather than expand my knowledge, simply because i know what i’m in for with said authors.
My love of reading often manifests itself in the form of novels, and I have quite an extensive to be read pile. (A problem that i’m positive many other bookworms can relate to!) I will often go for a book, rather than a graphic novel when i have a few extra dollars to spend on entertainment, but there is no denying that i come back to comics when there is something that catches my eye.
I am always drawn back to the medium, to the characters whom I love wholeheartedly, and to creative teams that I think deserve my support. I am drawn back to comics by the art, by the passion put into the characters and by the stories that reflect the world around us in a new and unique way.
Comics are such a prevalent part of pop culture it is almost more unbelievable that people have no passing interest in the medium whatsoever. I spent many years reading manga and novels, rather than american style comics, and have recently come back to reading a larger selection of american comics. The rebooting of the continuity within the Big-2 in 2012 really helped to bring me back into the fold of comics. Having a very clear entry point to get back into the worlds that I hadn’t really been a part of for so long brought me back and being able to have access to comics other than just Marvel and DC has truly kept me in the circle. Being able to a part of such a diverse, passionate community, especially with being able to share my thoughts with fans across the world thanks to social media, has helped keep me in.
Comics will always be a part of my life, and I will always come back to them, even when I am tired or disinterested because there is a home for me here. There is a passion and a love that i strive to capture in my day to day, and with the work that I do, creative work or otherwise. I owe so much to comics.
