It is always a special treat when we get to cover a convention, and this time, we’ve descended upon Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada, for the Edmonton Comic and Entertainment Expo.
I am, of course, Kai Kiriyama, and Mat – my co-host on Aggressive Negotiations – has become my Chewbacca. We’ve undergone this trip together, driving 3 and a half hours from home to get to Edmonton! We braved rain, lack of sleep and even less caffeine to get to Edmonton, and man, are we ever thrilled. It’s a lovely drive.
Day One of Edmonton Expo was quiet, but in a good way. So of course we went shopping! The best part about the first day of the Expo is always seeing the talented artists in Artist Alley. We didn’t get any prints today, I like to save part of my budget to get art on the last day so they don’t get wrecked. I was a little overwhelmed by all the talent! I don’t know what I’m going to get to adorn my office walls!
However, we did pick up some fun things for ourselves!
Friend of On Comics Ground, Ragnar the Trader was there, and I picked up some Viking Beard Beads, which I immediately braided into my hair. (I don’t have a photo. Maybe tomorrow.)
The first stop we made was to Ice Cream Dice and we of course had to get a set of their float dice. Mat picked rootbeer float, but every set of dice is absolutely gorgeous. If you follow Ice cream Dice on twitter, you can see all of
their updates – and boy are we ever looking forward to their next release!
The other big purchase Mat made today was this awesome coffee lover shirt from NOMS designs. The have a wide array of Japanese food lover shirts – including ramen and cup noodle! I love these shirts. I might have to go get the Boba one. Or maybe the Cup Noodle one.
Our shopping wouldn’t be complete without mini donuts! They’re my favourite Expo treat! (And I even made cookies and muffins for the trip, those mini donuts proved too tempting!)
Edmonton Expo has been amazing so far. I can’t wait to see all the cosplayers and do some panel events tomorrow! This has so far been a fun and relaxing convention.
Speaking of relaxing? There is the opportunity for a free back massage from Makami College. Calgary Expo has a parade, but Edmonton has masseuses on hand for mid-expo relaxation. I am sold. I’ll report back tomorrow!
It’s very late as I’m typing this, even though you’re reading it early. Mat is asleep and I’m typing as quietly as I can. Ha ha. Edmonton Expo has, so far, been great. You cannot beat the hospitality of a Canadian expo. Even if we are both totally beat. I can’t wait to share Day 2 with you!
