What You Need To Know:

Following the events of Absolute Carnage, in which Eddie killed Cassidy by ripping the symbiotes off of him in order to save his son, Eddie and Dylan begin adjusting to their new lives, especially now that Dylan knows Eddie is his father.

What Happens:

Eddie and Dylan have moved in with Liz and Normie following the near-apocalypse from Absolute Carnage unleashed on the country by Cletus Kassidy. Eddie is looking for a new job, and he just got an offer from a very unlikely party, all the while there’s something going on with the Venom Symbiote inside Eddie’s head. Get ready everyone, we’re gearing up for the next story arc in Cates’ Venom run, Venom Island!

Thoughts:

Cates continues to show why he’s one of my favorite writers at Marvel right now. He sets up some interesting ideas to come involving Eddie and his placement in the Marvel universe following Absolute Carnage. It was nice to see Liz again after so long, and Dylan and Normie have a great dynamic, they’re even referred to as cousins by Eddie, which I love. Dylan and Eddie’s relationship is more awkward than ever following Eddie revealing that he’s his father, with Dylan still not comfortable with calling him his dad just yet. Eddie’s new job(which I will not be revealing in this review due to spoilers because I want you all to read this book yourself) really makes way for a very new and interesting direction to take Eddie and Venom in, in my opinion.

The artwork by Mark Bagley is really good in my opinion. What can I say? I love his work on Ultimate Spider-Man, especially his work during the Venom arc, so I’m excited to see him draw some good Venom stuff in the issues to come, even though I do miss Ryan Stegman already. As the first issue setting up a new story arc after the massive story that was Absolute Carnage, I’m very into what Cates has in store with Venom Island.
