What You Need to Know: Carol Danvers, better known as Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful members of The Avengers. Recently, she saved Roosevelt Island from a sexist Maniac, helped stave off Multi-Realm War, stopped a copycat villain of herself from destroying everyone in New York, and pretended to kill all The Avengers to stop a powerful mutated villain from bombing refugee Kree camps. After all that, she deserves a break, right?
In This Issue: Carol’s apartment in New York is filled with a group of hero’s, all waiting for her to make the next move. Unfortunately, she does not have a good enough poker face for this poker game with her friends. That’s right, its Game Night with Monica Rambeau A.K.A Spectrum, Jennifer Takeda A.K.A. Hazmat, Jessica Drew A.K.A Spider-Woman and James Howlett, A.K.A. Logan A.K.A Wolverine. Carol is saved by the doorbell when Mz Marvel arrives to join the group but when she realizes they are gambling the mood drops since she can’t play (her religion forbids it remember?) and the gang tries to figure out what to do. Mz Marvel recommends they try the newest, most popular Escape Room in town called “Escape from New Jersey” feeling this is what they can call do together no problem. With some begrudging banter from a few members of the group, the group decides to give it a try. The owner, who calls himself “the Nexus” is more than welcome to let them take a room since he happens to be a huge fan of the Hero’s. But the room he gives them is a bit more than they bargained for when Logan realizes the structure is made of Vibranium and real water starts leaking in. As the group uses their powers things backfire and the situation starts to get dire until Mz. Marvel suggests that if they work together like they are supposed to in a Game then perhaps they can win. With a new plan, the Hero’s managing to literally blow themselves out of the room where Nexus is waiting for them with another surprise; he has powers of his own he is willing to use against them! But being a novice it’s easy enough to take him out and get a special pick up to take him to The Raft to be dealt with. Meanwhile, still in the mood for game night, there is only one place left to go; Trivia Night!
This issue was CLEARLY a filler issue which could go good or bad depending on how you look at filler episodes in general. While Thompson tries to put some good humor in her work with Carol, this had some very funny lines and moments between this diverse gang of hero’s and that kept it moving. Logan in particular had some pretty good moments while still maintaining being the bad as we all know and love him to be. Considering the dark, depressing, and tough stories Carol has been in lately, this is a nice relief for her and readers, especially with EMPYRE looming in the future which she is said to have a VERY large roll in. But until then the ending at Trivia Night about Captain America’s butt is a light-hearted way to end the gang’s night. Which reminds me, pick up issues #1 and #2 of that if you want to know what’s going to happen in the next issue of Captain Marvel. What gets me is the artwork in this issue is so delightful to look at that I can’t stop looking at it. I never thought Logan could look so hot, but Francesco Manna accomplished it and I hope to see more grace my pages soon.
