Writer: Donny Cates

Pencillers: Iban Coello and Juan Gedeon

Colorist: Jesus Aburtov

Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles

Cover Artists: Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, and Frank Martin

What You Need To Know:

Last time on Donny Cates’ insanity-inducing awesome known as Venom: Dylan used his newfound powers to help Eddie defeat Carnage once and for all(until the next time we need him for a story). Eddie lost his hand for good, and he has told the Avengers about Knull so that when he comes, they’ll have a chance at being ready for him.

What Happens:

Eddie decides he needs to take Dylan to the Maker so that he can figure out what’s going on with his powers and maybe stop his nightmares about Knull. However, the 2 are followed by none other than the new villain of the run, Virus. A mysterious man in some old symbiotic looking Iron Man armor that looks like it’s about to fall apart. Our father and son duo make it to Maker’s lair, where he has just finished work on his new inter-dimensional portal machine, hoping to return home to the Ultimate Universe. Maker also reveals his other newest project, the Ultimate Venom suit, which envelops him. Maker has improved it so it’s even more powerful and obedient than ever before, knocking Eddie out of his symbiote in a single hit. Just then Virus shows up on an old busted up goblin glider, hoping to settle the score with Eddie. He throws a pumpkin bomb at Maker’s machine, resulting in everyone in the room getting sucked in. Maker ends up exactly where he wanted, a post-apocalyptic Ultimate Universe, and Dylan and Eddie wake up in some unknown futuristic world, Venom Beyond starts now!

Thoughts:

Oh man it feels so good to get away from Carnage. Virus interests me as a new antagonist, mainly with how they use a bunch of old banged up the equipment of other Marvel characters, like the aforementioned Iron Man suit and old goblin glider and pumpkin bombs. Maker is a delight as always, and his new Ultimate Venom suit is really cool. It reminds me of the Endo-Sym from Superior Iron Man, in that it’s a synthetic symbiote, and has various other weapons and things normal symbiotes don’t have, like rockets. Eddie and Dylan are great together as always, and I am still really happy that Eddie seems to have permanently lost his hand. I hope that sticks at least as long as Thor had his arm gone(which I still wish he did). Venom Beyond feels like it’ll be another great time, and hey if I get to see Terry McGinnis in a symbiote Batman suit I’m in even more than I already am. The art by Iban Coello and Juan Gedeon is really good here, the way they draw the symbiotes is cool and I love how they drew the apocalyptic Ultimate Universe, with everything on fire and various signs asking where the Ultimates have gone. Overall this issue is great and seriously can’t wait for the next one, which comes out in… August.
