What You Need to Know: Born to a Kree Mother and a Human Father, Former U.S. Air Force Pilot Carol Danvers became Captain Marvel when a Kree Device activated her latent powers. Since then, she has become the Earth’s Mightiest Hero and a staple to the Avengers. But since discovering her Kree Heritage, Carol has struggled to find the balance between the two sides while committed to keeping the Earth safe. But now the only way to save the Earth from The Cotati, is to join the Kree with Hulking. The former Young Avenger who is now the newly crowned Emperor of the United Kree/Skrull Empire. He has asked Carol to take up the Universal Weapon, the Hammer once held by Ronan the Accuser, and be his new Supreme Accuser.
In This Issue: Cotati Space ships are attacking mercilessly throughout Space and just as all hope seems lost, Captain Marvel comes to the rescue swinging her new Hammer full of Kree Power to save the day. Returning to Hulking to give him an update on what is happening, Carol is feeling the pressure of her new title and the power that comes with it. But as Susan Richards, Invisible Woman, tries to calm her worries, a new threat has alerted Hulking and Carol is needed again. The message is so bad that Hulking can’t even tell her in front of his court and has to relay the message to Carol as she is on the way to a Sanctuary City. The first of its kind, supposed to be a place where Skrull and Kree could live beside one another peacefully, but it’s currently under attack. So, Carol must go the planet Mar-Da’en and deliver justice to the person, a Kree Soldier who has destroyed the city and murdered many innocents’ lives. The Soldier puts up a good fight but is no match for Captain Marvel and her new toy until her hammer reveals a secret to her that totally changes the game.
So, I told you in the last review that you needed to read Empyre and I meant it. Not only is it good so far but it’s filling in the gaps to what Carol is going through right now. Not that she isn’t already going through a pretty lovely time right now fighting ANOTHER war, this time for a race she has had issues with on and off with most of her Heroic life. Another new title comes with more responsibilities placed on Carol and her inner dialogue through the issue reflects the real concern she has. Even when she is destroying all the things, Carol still can’t help but think about if she is really doing the right thing, something that she KNOWS she shouldn’t have to think about. Although visually, watching her with her new Hammer and powers it’s pretty awesome. The twist at the end was a pleasant surprise even though not much information is given about the Kree Soldier, so you can’t help but wonder what the deal is with that character. Which is now going to cause A LOT of issues in the upcoming issues for Carol but some good storytelling for us readers.
Again, I HIGHLY recommend you get a copy of the EMPYRE run that’s going on now to see other sides of the story as well as being caught up on the general “what you need to know”.
