Well, folks, Tom King is back with our favorite never to truly be a couple. In a strange first installment of Batman Catwoman. We are thrust into a future world where Selina is on a scenic drive. Reminiscing about the glory days in Gotham. Once she arrives at her destination. An elderly man in a Hawaiian shirt greets her at the door. They talk small about each other’s families and how they have been.
During this talk, Selina’s memories keep barging through. Batman was once looking for a child of an old lover. His mother thought he escaped to Gotham, turns to Bruce to find him. Turns out, she was once thought dead from being trapped in a fire with the Joker. Presumed the only survivor she used this as cover to hide from the clown prince of crime in an attempt at what one could guess is a new life.
Her old friend asks what has happened to Bruce. She reluctantly explains that he has passed away. Got sick and didn’t seek medical care for it. As Bruce would tend to do. This brings tears to both Selina and her old friend. Who now makes his big reveal as to who he is. More importantly, his current intentions.
Thoughts
To me, this comic is very strange and off-putting. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt considering it is the first issue. However, something conducive needs to occur, fast. I worry about this book not really having any rails, let alone going off of them. With such wonder and mystery attached to a cliffhanger ending. It’s hard to imagine where this is going to go. The artwork is very good, doing well to portray youth and old age in some of our favorite Gothamites in a way that is seamless but not too telling of what exactly is going on. Tom has another mystery up his sleeve. After the last few he has done. I really really hope he is putting all of his efforts into making this not only captivating but compelling. Perhaps something that will bring his writing back to some form of prominence.
