“You’re a sweet, sweet boy. Hold onto that. For as long as you can.”
In This Issue: Duncan, Rose, and a wounded Bridgette return to Bath, where Duncan and Bridgette re-enter the Otherworld while Rose once again holds the candle to enable them to return.
Bridgette keeps telling Duncan not to bother because he’s going to get himself killed, but Duncan is having none of it and heads straight for Arthur’s castle, where they find the king in a heated discussion with Elaine about the recent turn of events. When Duncan and Bridgette show up, Elaine is perturbed, but Arthur is intrigued after Duncan slices through a wave of undead warriors in record time. It turns out that Excalibur was a bit more impressive than Bridgette had given it credit for. Arthur wants to make a trade—his scabbard for Excalibur—but Duncan refuses, as the sword is not his to give. He must return it to the Ladies of the Lake. Bridgette managed to sway the king, telling him how to get the blade himself, and how to change his story. Elaine tries to dissuade Arthur from allowing Bridgette to use the scabbard, but Arthur ignores her.
Bridgette, once she has her strength back, turns the tables on Elaine, telling Arthur how Galahad came to be—as the illegitimate son of Arthur’s queen and Lancelot, the French knight. Arthur, furious, turns on Elaine. Elaine turns to Galahad, who betrays her, but Duncan comes to her aid and keeps Arthur from harming her. Elaine takes off, and Bridgette tosses Arthur’s scabbard out the castle window by way of a distraction. As Arthur rushes off to reclaim his property, Duncan and Bridgette dash the portal back to the regular world. Seeing Elaine, they try to get her to come with them, but she simply runs the other way as everything melts around them and the story starts to shift.
Back in the real world, Duncan decides he can accept his place in the family trade, but his relationship with Bridgette? That may be marred—forever.
My Two Cents: A fantastic ending to a wonderful arc, issue #6 of Once & Future resolves as much as it blows open. This resolution of the Arthur story has been thwarted, but a new path has been forged for a different version to unfold. Arthur, now with a delusions-of-grandeur- riddled Galahad at his side and no more manipulating Elaine in either of their ears will continue his quest for the Grail and the re-subjugation of the Isles. Duncan, Bridgette, and Rose will continue to resist him. The story will continue to shift. The creative team will continue to wow readers with a solid story and captivating visuals. Watch for the next issue in March!
