What You Need to Know:

Knull, the God of the Symbiotes has arrived, and even though they were prepared, the heroes of Earth stood no chance against him. One by one, wave by wave the heroes lost against Knull’s never-ending army. Even the Sentry, Marvel’s Superman(one of them, anyway), was torn in half and thrown back down to Earth by the god himself. And lastly, Eddie Brock stood alone against his god, and his Other, his Symbiote, was stripped away, and he was dropped from the top of a skyscraper.

What Happens:

So Eddie falls on a car and is still barely alive. Spidey is swinging around trying to save as many as he can and finds Brock’s unconscious body. The “Knull-ified” heroes arrive to finish them off when the Human Torch arrives. Spidey tries to warn Johnny that fire doesn’t work on them as well as it used to, but Johnny doesn’t care, since it means he doesn’t have to worry about holding back. He tells Peter to tell the others that he said something cool and heroic before he got taken before we cut to an explosion as Peter swings away with Eddie’s body. Eddie is hooked up to all sorts of medical machines to keep him alive, as the heroes bicker about what to do next (Professor X and Magneto in particular are the most uncooperative). But then Namor arrives, taking charge and demanding orders. Tony says he has a plan, and he needs a dragon. He needs to fix up Eddie so they have a chance at beating Knull, so he needs a Symbiote. He uses Extremis to take control of a Dragon, get a cool new Symbiote armor design and dumps a Symbiote onto Eddie’s unconscious body. However, the Symbiote is immediately taken back over by Knull and starts killing Eddie. So Dylan reveals his powers to everyone and kills the Symbiote. Reed is astonished by this, believing Dylan to be the key to defeating Knull, until everyone in the room points out the obvious, Eddie Brock is dead.

Thoughts:

Oh boy. A LOT happens in this issue. Just wanna start off by praising the HELL out of Ryan Stegman’s art, JP Mayer’s inks, and Frank Martin’s colors. Just, the whole art team for this book has been hitting it out of the park and it is absolutely beautiful. Johnny’s sacrifice was a strong way to start, he’s arguably one of the most powerful heroes they have right now so him going down so easily is so disheartening. Namor’s entrance is also great, calling Knull’s title of King of the Abyss “adorable”, stating that if Knull has declared war on the world he declared it the most on him. Seeing Tony take control of the Dragon using Extremis is so cool, all the red parts turn yellow as all these veins grow all over its body. And the sequence of Eddie’s death is my favorite thing in the book. After Tony gets the Symbiote, we see everyone with Eddie, and along the panels is his heartbeat monitor. And after Dylan kills the Symbiote, he flatlines, so behind the heartbeat monitor flatline is just a bunch of E’s, representing the long beep sound that comes with it. It’s just SUCH a good issue and I can’t wait too see more of this event play out!
