Some spoilers for The Flash #56
The Sage Force is rampant and is feeding off of the trauma and insecurity of Mick Rory, the Flash Rogue Heatwave. Stuck in his mind, Flash and Detective Burns try to figure how they got there and how they can get out. But the mix of the Sage Force’s manifestation of Rory’s issues and the combo of Barry’s Speed Force, the whole city is in jeopardy of going nuclear.
This was a great issue overall. I will start with the art and the colors. The art in this issue is sleek and powerful. It matched well with the tone and the gravity of the story. Somehow I really got the feeling that Cold was impersonating Snart and it was the art that did that job. Also, the fiery maze was a great touch as well. As well, the colors were bright and complimentary. The deep red of the fire and also of Barry’s Flash suit worked well with the light blue of Heatwave’s Sage Force form.
I think this was a good ending to this arc. Rory is a troubled soul but the power of friendship conquers all. As well, since I started reviewing Flash, I think this is the best Barry “Come-to-Jesus” moment. He recognizes he’s been ignoring the answer to this all along, which is *drumroll* a Force Quest. I have no idea what a Force Quest entails but it sounds like an awesome next arc. The Iris twist was much needed, the Flash team is essential to his story. It is clear Barry shouldn’t work alone, not because he is deficient but because he flourishes working with others. To his knowledge, Barry wraps up all of his previous issues and is set on a quest to really figure out the forces. I wonder how the ending will play out in the next few issues, especially when we still have some other loose ends still in the queue.
Summary “The Last Embers” is the finale to the Sage Force story line, “Faster than Thought.” We get a taste of the power of empathy and the utility of teamwork all in one issue. Barry finally owns up to some things, he’s need to for a while, since Wally and Wallace left. I’d say both Cold and Iris are essential to Flash’s success. Open up this issue and figure out how.
