What You Need to Know: Once, Jane Foster was the Mighty Thor when Odisnson was no longer worthy to hold his Hammer. Now that he is and has become the new All-Father, Jane has taken up a new mantle as the last Valkyrie. In this time, she has fought Bullseye and the Grim Reaper, all working on behalf of the Hell Lord Mephisto AND she saved Death herself from the ultimate end. Granted, this has not helped her in maintaining a normal life and career as a doctor now that her Cancer is gone. Jane has been demoted to working in the Morgue and trying to get back to the swing of things with little luck…
In This Issue: Deep in the Midgard Core, a rotting corpse sleeps soundly. But using a glowing nectar, someone is about to wake him up. Meanwhile, on the surface of Midgard, Jane Foster is trying to have a nice, friendly, totally normal lunch with friend. But it isn’t long before Jane realizes something is wrong, not just with her social life but when her Valkyrie eyes see death over everyone around them, she springs into action. Dark creatures spring from deep in the Earth and begin consuming anyone they can touch, including Jane. Thanks to her strong will the help from her All Weapon, she is able to free herself. But help is on the way with Captain America, Spiderman, Dr. Strange and soon enough the All-Father himself Thor. Knowing another attack is coming, Thor and Jane decide to head down to where the creatures came from hoping to stop it at its source. In the deep, Thor tells Jane about a time when he was younger, and his father Odin told him the tale of The Anti-Life; an entity that is the opposite of life also called The Rokkva. Ode, one of the first kings wanted to harness its power and attempted to take control over the Rokkva and it made him the most powerful being in all the Realms. But it eventually consumed him, and, in the end, he did not die as much as he cease to be and what ever remained was buried at the foot of a mountain in Jotunheim. Or at least that’s what Thor thought, until he and Jane come upon the remains of Ode being given life from the Sap of Yggdrasil. In true Thor fashion, he decides to destroy the corpse with his hammer, but only to have the deadly curse corrupt him!
Poor Jane, you would think by now that she would know that once a Superhero, a normal life is impossible. But we’ve all been there when it comes to dating; meet someone then go to save the world and just bail when you get back. No? Just Jane? Oh well. Got to give it to her with taking being a hero as just part of her new life. Then again, with everything she has been though it really shouldn’t come as a surprise. And she has tried dating, even if it was with a fellow Avenger. Also, props to Captain America for a fantastic entrance and being chill about not only there being a new hero on the scene but that its Jane Foster in a new suit! I also enjoyed the humor behind Jane noticing all the big hitters joining the fight. The interaction between Mr. Horse and Spiderman is a good laugh out loud moment. But, despite the fights and appropriately placed jokes, it’s the moments between Jane and Thor that make the story. Its’s the first time they’ve really spent time together since both took up their new mantles (and if you’ve been reading Thor, a lot has been going on, but this arch takes place JUST before that) and its obvious they both need these moments alone. The two have been connected for years in so many ways it’s only fitting the two of them have this much needed talk. Get ready for some pretty big character development from both characters in this followed by a very evil cliff hanger! Actually, art wise, the last page might be my favorite visually with how the colors are treated and it mixes with the style.
Summary Life and Death are a huge part Jane Foster's being. So when an ancient entity bent of sucking all the life out of Earth's inhabitants comes up from the ground, its up to her to stop it But she's got some help from members of the Avengers, as well as her old friend and former flame the new All-Father Thor!
