What You Need To Know:

Dylan and the heroes of Earth are on the offensive, as Knull’s hold over the Earth begins to weaken. Jean Grey learns of the God of Light by reading Knull’s memories, just as Silver Surfer arrives, delivering said God to Earth. Soon after Reed reveals who this God of Light actually is, Captain Universe, the Enigma Force, and it chooses Eddie Brock.

What Happens:

Knull faces down against Silver Surfer and the rest of the heroes when Venom arrives. He takes Mjolnir and Surfer’s board, bashes them together, and forges a cosmic axe to fight Knull with. The two gods fight, resulting in Venom ripping the symbiotes from his body and dropping him from the same building he was dropped from in issue 1. Venom then takes Knull, flies him through the symbiotic bubble around the planet, and all the way into the sun, proclaiming that Knull might be right, that there will always be Darkness, and that defeat is inevitable, but none of that matters, as Knull is reduced to nothing within the heart of the sun. Eddie returns to Earth, with the Symbiotes now free from Knull’s control, they begin calling too Eddie. Thor and Surfer retrieve their things, as Eddie removes “The Darkness” from Dylan, ensuring he’ll never become like Codex or Knull. And with that, the Enigma Force leaves Eddie, as his symbiote returns to him, telling him that with Knull gone, Eddie has become the new God of the Symbiotes. He is now the King in Black.

Thoughts:

This is probably my favorite event from Marvel in a long, long time. The final issue felt a bit too short, mainly the final battle with Knull. I feel like more could have been done to make it feel more like an even fight and less like Eddie just curb stomping him the whole time. But it’s okay because his Cosmic Venom Axe made out of the Silver Surfer’s Board and Thor’s Hammer makes up for it. I imagine that the final issue of Cates’ run on Venom will serve as a sort of epilogue to the event, like how there’s an issue of Venom that served as an epilogue to Absolute Carnage. Which speaking of Cates’ run, what the hell are they gonna do with Venom after he leaves? Bring back Flash for real I guess? That’d be cool. Let’s do that. … I miss Flash. Anyway, Stegman’s art and Frank Martin and Jason Keith’s colors are amazing. Especially the final page of Venom against the daylight, something I don’t think we’ve seen in a loooong time now. So yeah, King in Black is a really really fun time, and I’m gonna be sad to see this era of Venom end soon.
