*NEWS FLASH* CW’s Supergirl announces addition of TV’s First Transgender Superhero along with other characters
CW’s Supergirl announces at Hall H today that they have cast trans activist Nicole Maines (The Trans List, Royal Pains) as TV’s first transgender superhero, another member of the Legion of Super Heroes. Maines was the pseudymous plaintiff of Doe v. Clenchy, brought before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in June 2013, which set a precedent for allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice . Maines will play Nia Nal, bearing similarity to Nura Nal aka Dream Girl and later Dreamer in the comics. Nal is described as, “a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others.” The arc of the character will see Nal develop into The Dreamer.
CBR reports that Nura Nal, a fan-favorite DC character better known as Dream Girl from the Legion of Super-Heroes was briefly known as Dreamer in the 1990s. Introduced in 1964 in Adventure Comics #317, Dream Girl comes from the planet Naltor, whose inhabitants possess precognitive abilities, in which they have futuristic visions through dreams.
Maines joins Season 4 along with April Parker Jones (Jericho, The Last Ship) as Colonel Haley and David Ajala (Doctor Who, The Dark Knight) as Manchester Black. Jesse Rath, introduced in Season 3 as Brainiac 5, and Sam Witwer, who will play Agent Liberty, were previously announced as series regulars for Season 4.
Starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danver, Supergirl returns on a new night, Sunday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
